“We’re here to cover the event”

CommentOctober 2nd, 2009 03:25

As many of you know, Yoo-N-LA recently attended the First in Class Productions’ – 1st Annual Fashion Show. So…what’s the big deal??…Well, this was Yoo-N-LA’s first time covering an event, that’s what!! The whole experience was so surreal.

Here’s how it went down:

Click, clack. Clomp. Click, clack. Clomp (sound of numerous high heels and men’s “Sunday best” dress shoes walking briskly on the pavement towards the event registration table).

As Waverly and I approach the table we hear:

“Ooh you’re a photographer?…you can set up over there.”

“Are you a model?…You need to be backstage, they’re waiting for you.”

“Next?…who’s next?”

Waverly: “Ooh my gosh, I’m so nervous!”

Janae: “Me too! Can you believe we’re here??

Waverly: “No! Where’s Ericka? Should we call her? How do we get in?”

Janae: “Ericka’s on her way. She said to ask for Mia or Bree and they should let us in.”

Waverly: “Who are they? Do they know we’re coming??”

Janae: “Uhmmm…I’m not sure.”

Waverly: “Should we wait?”

Janae: “No, let’s just go for it. Hi, my name is Janae Jacobs and this is Waverly Coleman. We’re here representing Yoo-N-LA Magazine and we’re here to cover the event.”

Hostess: “Ooh you’re with the Press?!”

Janae: “Yes. We were invited by Remy.”

Hostess: “Okay, well here are your press passes then…. We can actually let you in now. You don’t have to wait outside. Feel free to go inside and get a drink.”

DSC00033Note: I don’t think I’ll ever forget that moment and how good it felt to say that Yoo-N-LA was present and that we were there to cover the event…..what a rush!! Also, there were only 5 press individuals allowed in before the show started, and Yoo-N-LA represented three out of that five!

As we approached the entrance, we were greeted with numerous photographers taking pictures of “anyone who’s anyone” on the red carpet in the center of the outside foyer.

DSC00044Waverly and I finally reunite with Yoo-N-LA writer, Ericka Santos and we immediately pick first dibs on seats directly in front of the runway.

Remy and his clothing line “Engineered by Remy” was the first line up. The crowd sat amazed as dozen of models walked out sporting striking custom jackets – some leather, some trimmed with material that appeared to be fine cashmere. (My favorite piece was a jacket inspired by Michael Jackson’s famous red thriller jacket). Model after model, your eyes gazed up and down as you were captivated by Remy’s designs. One couldn’t help but notice that whether it be a jacket, a tie, a belt, a pair of shoes, or a dress…each piece was unique in its own and signed with Remy’s three colored trademark logo: two blue strips surrounding one single strip of red. That trademark, is distinctive and ingenious of its own, being that it stood out amongst against any color, be it white, black, green or the like. In my opinion, Remy’s collection possessed the only trademark that was memorable on its own free standing.

(Remy…can I get a custom dress?? I’m not picky. :) )DSC00056

As the night progressed we were teased with more beautiful, eclectic, racy, couture designs – some designs being so tempting, we contemplated ripping them off a few of the models and taking them for ourselves. (I think Waverly actually came close! Haha!).

DSC00069Sadly, it finally came to and end. I neverknew fashion could be so exhausting!! It may have been all of the excitement, but all I know is that I was mentally and physically drained. LOL

DSC00062As we parted ways, there was an unspoken notion amongst the three of us that Yoo-N-LA had accomplished a huge feat and hit a major turning point of its existence. At that moment, it hit me how real this was…how HUGE this was…this is no joke.  This is Yoo-N-LA. This is what we do! My only wish is that the full team of Yoo-N-LA could have been present. Although you weren’t physically there, you were there in spirit. We’re doing it you guys!…and I feel the urge to say that none of this could be possible without each and every one of you. You guys make Yoo-N-LA possible. Thank you for turning this dream into a reality.

Ohh look at who found her voice. Let me first say this is completely worth the wait and the waking up out of my sleep for. I remember when you first began to blog and you were writing APA or MLA format… and now look at you… really blogging! If I took your name off the top of this piece I would know you wrote it and that is how its supposed to be. As time goes by you will love what you write more and more. Welcome to the working press. Save all your press passes… keep them as mementos of where you’ve been and what you covered.

Needless to say I’m proud of you. Keep up the hard work.
Let’s make history.
