England gave us the Beatles and Elton John, and after decades of idle gratitude and unreturned favor, we may actually have something to give back: Steven Miranda and Jeff Ellis. These American ambassadors are making a splash across the pond by bringing our foreign friends the gift of football. I’m not talking about the kind of Football that’s played on a “pitch” and in short-shorts reminiscent of the Magic Johnson’s “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s. I’m talking about the Smash Mouth, gridiron game that has captivated the hearts and minds of Americans for almost 100 years. In 2009, The National Football League is poised to continue it’s explosion into the mainstream consciousness of Western Europe, and Steven Miranda and Jeff Ellis of NFL Rants and Raves hope to help usher the NFL into this new, budding market.

What started out as a simple one-time rant on an Internet blog about a silly Minnesota Vikings personnel decision almost 5 years ago has now blossomed into a weekly podcast with thousands of listeners worldwide. Despite the revolving door of co-hosts in the beginning that included friends, actors, and spouses, NFL Rants and Raves really hit its stride when Steven invited brother-in-law Jeff Ellis to partner with him – the chemistry was undeniable. The show, which is a spontaneous amalgamation of predictions, opinions, and random personal stories, has struck a beautiful chord with an audience of listeners around the world. This chord proved so beautiful that NFL Rants and Raves has most recently been nominated for two of the Podcast World’s highest honors – Best Produced Show & Best Sports Show – lofty achievements for two regular guys who just love football and dream of getting paid to watch it.

The Pasadena-based podcast is steadily growing in popularity and has a stout fan base in the Los Angeles area. This base is so dedicated that when the show fell on rough economic times, it was a contingency of loyal listeners, many of them Angelinos, who donated their own money to keep the show afloat. Grateful for the local support, the guys have continued to build their product to the point where they’ve grabbed the attention of Sky Sports, a division of the British pay – TV Sky Broadcasting Company, which televises American Football in England and Ireland. Shooting weekly spots for the British TV company is a stepping stone to what Steven and Jeff hope will be larger opportunities in the future – opportunities to bring their spontaneous, fun, and lighthearted brand of football-centered entertainment to the world.

Taking the world by storm is and will be no easy task. On the contrary, it will take a lot of strategic planning and a lot of hard work – the work of a couple football aficionados is never done. There are games to watch, research to do, fantasy football teams to manage, and countless other tasks that come along with the territory. But to Steven and Jeff, it’s not “work” in the conventional sense. It’s every man’s dream job. On its most basic level, they’re a couple of guys making moves to earn a living, kickin’ back in their living room, clowning around, and dishing football. Try not to be jealous.

I liked this article about these two football moguls. What a life! Nice write-up, Jason. I actually could “feel” these two gents as you described what it’s like for Steven and Jeff to podcast sports. Nice photography, JJ. The two look like they are enjoy what they do. We will try to not be jealous!

This is the most entertaining and informative NFL radio show around and is a must listen. I actually like the off season shows more since they tangent a lot more then during the regular season.

I have been following Steve and Jeff for a few NFL seasons now and as a American “stranded” in Scotland acorss the pond they essential for keeping me up to date with the NFL while providing a human side to the stories that capture us. From the “Will he won’t he?” Brett Favre retirement to the Jeff Eliis Curse these guys are great, honest hard-working fans with a touch of class.

Gret article. I’ve been listening to their show for Four years now, and downloading a new show is an instant highlights in my week! Living in Denmark, it can be somewhat og a Challenge to follow the NFL, but these guys make it so much more fun and easy. I love the NFL, and I hope this show will continue for years to come.
Just a fan in Copenhagen.

Nobody deserves it more then these two. I’ve been listening since season 3 and still have every episode still on my PC (around 14 GBs!!). I look forward for the new episodes to make my daily commutes/work days tolerable. Hopefully NFL Network sees this article and gives these guys a show.

Here in Sweden we don’t get much NFL info, so these guys are a great source for current NFL information (and an even better source for entertaining tangents and digressions). I am still to miss a single episode since the start, and I will keep it like that as long as they continue to provide me with their very entertaining and informative podcast.
Tack!

Just found these guys on iTunes at the beginning of the last NFL season. They are hilarious and so well informed. Sky Sports has great NFL coverage in the UK and Jeff and Steve provide a couple of top weekly shows to get me through the daily commute. I am really pleased that they are back for season 6. We’ll see you over here forthe 49ers/Broncos in October

I decided to try to follow a whole season of NFL. Not too easy in Europe. Fortunately, about a year ago, a friend recomended NFLRandR. I started listening to their preseason shows and come kick off, I was totally up to speed. I went from having NO IDEA who the likes of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning or Brett Favre were, to being totally up to speed with all things NFL. This is one excellent show! And now I’m addicted to both the NFL and the R&R show.

This writer is off the chain! Did someone say football? Cuz that’s my sports right thurrrr. Football should be worldwide by now. I would love to see an expansion team in Asia. Keep it up! I’ll tune in for more sports talk. Outie.

Great article about some great guys. I could not recommend their shows any higher. Anybody with even a waning interest in football should listen to them. Even if you don’t like football, their stories and tangents will crack you up. Keep up the good work!
